Scaling
Scaling Relationships in Malaria Policy
Draft – Please be patient.
In 1997, Brian Greenwood’s essay Malaria Transmission and Vector Control addressed some important questions about malaria control [1].
How should we expect the burden of malaria to change if we implement or change malaria control?
What are the prospects for malaria elimination?
The question is about scaling relationships in malaria: how do various measures of malaria change across the spectrum of malaria transmission intensity? To address these questions, we have conducted a study that starts with simple models and explores effects of several factors:
Malaria Importation
Environmental Heterogeneity
Heterogeneous Exposure / Frailties
Seasonality
Malaria Immunity
Treatment and Chemoprotection
Next, we look at combinations of all these factors. We stop short of addressing questions about the study design.
