The radiation response of a collection of cells is determined by a series of parameters that characterize key molecular and cellular processes.  For some processes, alternate mathematical models are provided (e.g., the Virtual Cell includes three different models for DNA damage formation and repair processes).  The Virtual Cell automatically provides reasonable default values are for all model inputs.  Other sections of the manual provide sample input files as well as discussion on the theoretical aspects of the VC system of models.

Tip: In the Virtual Cell, radiation dose is related to cell killing and neoplastic transformation through a system of molecular and cellular biophysical models.  Each of the model components describes some key aspect of "The Biology. These models are then linked together to form a super model, an approach sometimes termed multi-scale or hierarchical modeling.
