Research-based coaching

Your physician keeps you healthy by prescribing medications shown to be effective in carefully controlled scientific studies. Shouldn't your coach prescribe workouts according to the same principle?

"Research-Based Coaching" is my term for the practice of using data from scientific research to help athletes perform their best. I did most of my reading and writing in this area when I was a physiology graduate student. After I received my Ph.D., my research focus shifted from human muscle metabolism to bacterial metabolism and then to protozoan parasites, so I no longer keep up with the exercise physiology literature as I once did. However, in my free time, I still enjoy trying to run as fast as possible and writing about it in my blog.
