Is there anything more ridiculous than a self-published press release?
Crowther Named Distinguished Educator by American Physiological Society (March 28, 2026)
Dr. Gregory Crowther, a biology instructor at Everett (WA) Community College, has been named the American Physiological Society's 2026 Arthur C. Guyton Distinguished Educator. The award, considered the highest honor of the APS Teaching Section, will be formally presented at the annual APS Summit in Minneapolis on April 24, 2026. Awardees are also invited to write an essay for the APS journal Advances in Physiology Education; Crowther's essay is titled An Exam is a Moral Document.
Arthur C. Guyton, MD (1919-2003) was a cardiovascular physiologist who made monumental contributions to physiology research and physiology education. Reflecting this dual legacy, two annual APS awards bear his name: the Arthur C. Guyton Awards for Excellence in Integrative Physiology (for research) and the Arthur C. Guyton Distinguished Educator award (for teaching).
Crowther teaches Human Anatomy and Human Physiology to pre-nursing students and other pre-health sciences students at Everett Community College north of Seattle. He is also an affiliate instructor at the University of Washington's Bothell campus. In the 34-year history of the Guyton award, Crowther is the first recipient whose primary appointment is at a two-year college. He has previously been honored by the APS with a Teaching Career Enhancement Award (2021) and as a Star Reviewer (2023).
Crowther earned a B.A. in Biology at Williams College (1995) and a Ph.D. in Physiology & Biophysics at the University of Washington (2002). His graduate work on muscle physiology, conducted in the labs of the late Kevin Conley and the late Martin Kushmerick, brought him to his first APS conferences (Experimental Biology, 1999-2000) and led to his first publications in APS journals (the American Journal of Physiology, 2002). Crowther conducted postdoctoral laboratory research from 2003 to 2014 before refocusing his efforts on teaching. He earned a M.A. in Science Education from Western Governors University in 2018 and has taught at Everett Community College since 2018.
Crowther is an author or coauthor of over 50 peer-reviewed publications, and sits on the editorial boards of CBE-Life Sciences Education, HAPS Educator, and the International Journal of Science Education.
