Rutan earned his PhD degree in analytical chemistry in Fudan University, China. During his graduate training, he learned the fundamental knowledge of mass spectrometers, microbiology and fabrication of semiconductors. He developed a semiconductor-based mass spec method for the rapid classification of clinical bacteria and studied the mechanism of a well-known semiconductor-bacteria hybrid photosynthetic system. Driven by his interest in omics, he joined the Xu lab in the third quarter of 2019 to start his postdoc training and his project focuses on development of high throughput lipidomic method and its potential clinical applications. In his spare time, Rutan like playing table-tennis, jogging and reading.
