Ethnography often involves working in dangerous situations; though few ethnographers have been killed in the field, many have had to deal with injury, illness, and ever-present danger. Today we look at how two very prominent anthropologists have dealt with danger while investigating criminal behavior. We will also have as a guest speaker Professor Danny Hoffman, who lived in a militia barracks in Sierra Leone right after a cease-fire in a war that was not yet proclaimed to be over.

Read the following:
  • Nancy Scheper-Hughes, Parts Unknown
  • Philippe Bourgois, Violating Apartheid in the United States, from In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio

  • Then, by midnight on Thursday, October 30, post a comment of about 200 words on an ethical question or dilemma that you think is raised by one or the other of the passages we read, and how you might respond if you faced a similar dilemma or question.
