Your second class exercise is due for today. Your assignment is twofold:
  • Do a field observation. Go to a public place or a public event with a question in mind that you might begin to answer, or at least address, by observation (no interviewing or other direct interaction with people). Spend from 10 to 20 minutes observing behavior that might lead to an answer to your question, and take careful notes.
  • By 9:00 a.m on the day of class, transcribe and post your notes, or a summary of your notes. Then append a self-critique including what you wish was in the notes but wasn't.
We will spend our class time discussing both the question of regret for questions unasked or behaviors unlooked for or unrecorded, and how this illustrates the influence of the observer on her observations.
