Adolescent Development I

Development in School Contexts

Winter 2007

Make-up for Snowy Day I (Nolen)

Notes:

We did two small group activities in class on Thursday to help link the theory in the Eccles, et al piece with the practical considerations according to high school students.

If you missed class (or the first half of class) on Thursday, please do Activity 1 on your own and bring to class. Pick one Eccles quote from the handout, and summarize on regular paper rather than posters. For Activity 2, brainstorm some responses to the questions (below) and bring these to class. We will finish the activity at the beginning of class on Tuesday.

Activity 1. Base Groups: Stage-environment fit: Only for early adolescents? (Download activity handout here)

  • Assign Eccles quotes to base groups
  • Each group finds evidence/counter-evidence of stage-environment fit concerns in Fires in the Bathroom
  • Post summary of findings (with examples) on wall

Activity 2. Subject Groups: Stage-environment fit in your classrooms

  • Discuss what a classroom with good stage-environment fit would look like in your subject area.
  • Any level, course, or dept. or school structure issues in implementation?
  • Create a poster that shows
    • Important characteristics
    • How they address stage-environment fit issues
