Adolescent Development I

Development in School Contexts

Winter 2007

Assignments & Grading Policy

Assignments

For this course, there will be two written assignments: the Relational Pedagogy Project and the Future Classroom Plan, both of which are designed to connect the course material and subject matter with the course and field experiences.

Relational Pedagogy Project

Throughout the quarter you will be asked to work on a Relational Pedagogy Project, which consists of three parts (described below).  This project will combine the knowledge you learn in this course with the knowledge you will acquire in the field.  Each part of the project will include thoughtful answers to the questions posed and examples of the strategies you are asked to create along with a rationale for their inclusion.  The rationale should reflect and specifically cite course readings.

  • Part 1:  Getting to Know Your Students: The Plan. Create a plan to get to know the students in one of your field placement classes. Due January 18.
  • Part 2:  Getting to Know Your Students:  How Well Did It Work? Reflect on how your plan worked, with which students, and why. Due February 22.
  • Part 3:  Working More Effectively with Students:  My Preferences, My Biases? Consider your work with students who were easy or hard to get to know, and what that might mean for you as a teacher. Due March 1.

Your Future Classroom:  Due March 8

Write a description of your plans and vision of your future classroom, as you see them now.  Identify and discuss the primary principles/goals/values that will guide you as you plan your future classroom.  Indicate their relationship to issues and task of adolescent development as presented in the readings and discussions.  Consider in your description the climate of the classroom, how students will act and interact with you and each other, and how this plan fits with the ways you intend to teach.

Grading Policy

Course grades will be based primarily on the written assignments and will be assigned at the end of winter quarter.  Your course grade will be based on the written assignments (95%) and your group and individual participation (5%).

Papers can be revised and resubmitted for full credit. This is actually built into the first assignment (RP part 1), which will be submitted in final form with Part 2. The rest of the quarter is very tight. If you anticipate wanting to resubmit, you may need to hand in your first attempt earlier than the due date and talk with the instructor about turnaround time. All written work must be turned in by Friday, March 9 at 4:30. No work will be accepted after that date unless the student qualifies for an incomplete (in good standing within 2 weeks of the end of the course + major life emergency, illness, or trauma).

Late work: Papers that are handed in on the due date will be returned in one week, in most cases. Papers that are turned in after the due date will be graded as we can work them into our schedules. It’s a tight quarter: let’s all try to avoid last-minute pile-ups of work!

The Relational Pedagogy (RP) assignments will receive the following weighting:

  • Part 1:  Getting to Know Your Students:  The Plan (15%);
  • Part 2:  Getting to Know Your Students:  The Plan, Its Implementation, and Evaluation: How Well Did It Work?  (30%);
  • Part 3:  Working More Effectively with All Students (30%).

Future Classroom Plans: 20% of your final grade.

To calculate your grade, you can use the following:

            RP #1                      _______ x  .15 = ________

            RP #2                      _______ x  .30 = ________

            RP #3                      _______ x  .30 = _________

            Future Classroom     _______ x  .20 = ________

            Participation             _______ x  ..05 = ________

FINAL GRADE                                            ___________
