Forest management and economics, forest valuation, timber taxation, timber and timberland appraisal, management science, planning, forest policy, and decision support systems.

Initiating a program that is looking into forest sustainability and certification issues in the PNW.

RESEARCH SYNOPSIS:

Application of economic and management science tools to problems of forest land management. These problems run over various spatial and temporal scales ranging from the stand- and forest-levels to the multi-forest-level and cover time periods of 1 - 100 years. Both ecosystem management as well as traditional forest management paradigms are studied within a hierarchical framework.

Timber valuation and taxation issues involve the study of various theories for appraising timber and timberlands under differing systems of taxation. Effects at both the intensive and extensive margins are studied. Market-based as well as capitalization-based approaches of timber appraisal are explored for valuing large and small timbered tracts.
