Updated: October 23, 2008

Seve Ballesteros, winner of five major professional golf tournaments (three British Opens and two Masters), was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. Ballesteros was admitted to a hospital in Spain on October 6, 2008, and had surgery to remove the tumor on October 14. At this time, it is unknown if the cancer is malignant or benign. News agencies report that Ballesteros has undergone additional surgery to treat swelling in his brain.

Ballesteros is currently in the intensive care unit, in stable condition, at Madrid's La Paz hospital. Let's hope for a full recovery for this champion.

UPDATE (October 23, 2008): According to the Associated Press and Los Angeles Times, tests have revealed that the tumor is a malignant oligoastrocytoma.
