The National Football League has pledged to donate $30 million to the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health in support of research about medical conditions that affect athletes and the general public. This donation will be the largest gift that the NFL has ever given.

The money will be used create a Sports and Health Research Program at the National Institutes of Health. This new center will likely study such disorders as concussions, pain, joint disease, and the relationship between traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's disease).
