Title Text: "Grading"

Grading Criteria for Presentations

Group members will receive 90 points for the in-class presentation and 10 points for the follow-up memo.  While each group member will receive the same number of points for the in-class presentation, they will be graded individually on the memo.  For the in-class presentation, I will assign 0-15 points in each of the following categories, with 0 representing a missing component and 15 representing exceptional execution of the criterion.
  • Focus--The group covers one or two key issues in depth, presenting a clear argument regarding the director, her films, or the contexts surrounding her work.
  • Organization--The presentation has a logical structure; the progression of points is easy to follow.  All information and evidence related to a particular point is presented along with that point.
  • Coherence--Each point discussed has an obvious relation to the other points and to the central argument.
  • Evidence--Each claim is supported by sufficient and persuasive evidence (film clips, references to research and course readings, etc.).
  • Completeness--The presentation demonstrates sufficient research of relevant sources.  The group has not ignored important materials and can answer questions about all information presented.
  • Delivery--The group has coordinated elements of the presentation.  Speakers convey their points smoothly and speak for the same amount of time.  The group adheres to the time limit.   If the group incorporates visual aids, the aids are well prepared (tapes cued to clips, handouts and slides readable and uncluttered, etc.) and play an essential role in the presentation.
For the memo, I will award full points to documents that have all the required elements:
  • description of the writer’s contribution to the presentation
  • listing of the sources used in the presentation
  • explanation of how the information presented is essential to our understanding of the director and her work
I will deduct points from memos that lack one or more of the components above.
