ANTHROPOLOGY 469A/JSIS 484F

TAIWAN: CULTURE, SOCIETY, HISTORY

TOPICS AND READINGS FOR MONDAY, MARCH 7

TOPICS
Taiwanese people are still wrestling with the relationship between the local and the national, whatever the national might be defined as being (Taiwan, China, Han People, Austronesians, Pacific Rimmers, etc.). Today we are going to look at a series of articles on various aspects of creating Hoklo, Hakka, and Indigenous identity in the late 20th and early 21st century.

READINGS
ASSIGNMENT
By 8:00 a.m. on Monday, March 7, please post 200-400 words on whether you think Taiwan can be successful in creating a national identity that is multicultural and border-crossing, as opposed to the usual nation-state identity that is uni-cultural and border reinforcing.
