TOPICS AND READINGS FOR MONDAY, JANUARY 11

TOPICS
Today's class is all about the parties, candidates, and issues in the election that is coming up on Saturday, January 16, when voters will choose both the President and the Legislative Yuan. On the previous Friday, January 8, you each will have chosen a party, candidate, or issue to report on, and you will be expected to do some research (most likely on the internet) and prepare to give a 5-10 minute presentation on your chosen party, candidate, or issue. We will then have a general discussion of why certain people are ahead in the polls and how their election reflects the social and political situation and is likely to influence local and international politics in the near future.

READINGS
There are no specific assigned readings for today; it's up to you to find relevant material on any the candidate or issue that you will be reporting on. However, here are some places to start (English-language only, but there is obviously a lot in Chinese) ASSIGNMENT

By 8:00 a.m on Monday, January 11 please post 200-400 words on the candidate or issue you are going to present on in class. Don't just give biographical details of a candidate; also say why her or his positions are what they are, and what his or her chances of election might be. This post may be in either English or Chinese.
