Installing the Virtual Cell

Tip: The installation procedure can be tested by running the sample problems from the command prompt.  After completing the system configuration steps outlined below, the VC and related applications (RIO, XIO, RXSM) can be easily accessed and used on your computer from the command prompt (what is the command prompt?).

Overview

Execution of the following steps will add the “bin” folder to your system path. The bin folder contains the VC executables. The system path tells the operating system how to find key files and executables.  If you do not add the bin folder to your system path, you will  have to type the complete folder name in order to run the VC and related computer programs (e.g., you would need to type c:\vc\bin\vc in order to run the software at the command prompt instead of just typing vc).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find the  Start  button on the left bottom corner on your screen and left click on it.

  2. Find the icon for the  Control Panel  and left click on it.

  3. Find the  Performance and Maintenance  icon and left click on it (assuming you are using Windows 2003.)

  4. Find the  System  icon  and left click on it (assuming you are using Windows 2003.) Note: The procedure up to this point is meant to get the user to the “System” so that the necessary changes can be made. If you are operating on an earlier version of Windows, you may be able to get to the system in somewhat a similar manner.

  5. The folder that opened will read “System Properties” on the top and there will be several tabs just  below. Left click on the  Advanced   tab.

  6. At the bottom of this window, you’ll find the  Environmental Variables  and left click on it.

  7. At the top of the “Environmental Variables” window,  find a box with the title “User variables for ...”. In the box, the first line will read “Path                C:\ ......”.  Left click on the button  New  .

  8. This will bring up a smaller window with the heading “Edit User Variable”. There are two fields (where you can type things in).

  9. In the first field type “Pathwithout the quotation marks.

  10. In the second field type  “%path%;C:\VC\bin” without the quotation marks.

  11. bxs folder contains additional files that may be required for the VC execution. By default, VC will load data from the electron.mcer file (i.e., low LET).  Other data files can be specified from the command line (type and enter  "vc -h" without the quotation marks for command line options).

  12. In order to make the bxs folder accessible by VC, follow the procedure illustrated in items 1 through 10 to add an environment variable to point to the root VC folder (e.g., "C:\VC" without the quotation marks). The name of the environment variable should be "VC" without the quotation marks and the value of the environment variable should be "C:\VC" without the quotation marks. Once this environment variable has been set, the VC will automatically look for *.mcer files in the .\vc\bxs folder

  13. Close all the windows that you have opened in the above process by left clicking  Apply  (first choice) or  Ok  (second choice) buttons, which ever available at the bottom of the respective window. Note: Completing the above steps, should configure the VC environment variables in your computer.

Tip: The environmental variable need to be reconfigured should you wish to alter the "VC", "bin" or "bxs" folder locations.
