TAIWAN: CULTURE, SOCIETY, HISTORY

TOPICS AND READINGS FOR MONDAY, JANUARY 25

TOPICS
Today we delve into what is really the first period of Taiwan's past that we can write about as history: everything earlier is archaeology and reconstruction, much of it speculative. We center our attention on two colonial occupations: that of the Dutch from 1622 to 1662, which was mostly confined to the southwestern part of the Island, and that of Zheng Chenggong 鄭成功 or Koxinga, from 1662-1683. In class I will present a bit more material about the nature of Dutch and Zheng colonial regimes, and we weill discuss the question from your internet posting.

READINGS ASSIGNMENT
By 8:00 a.m on Monday, January 25, please post 200-400 words on question just exactly whose hero Zheng Chenggong is and/or should be. This post may be in either English or Chinese, but perhaps it's better if this one is in Chinese.
