The Internet is not just about information. It is also about communication.

Conduct an experiment. Take a random group of people into a computer lab. Leave them in there by themselves for 10 minutes without any information. Now, return and take a quiet walk around the lab. What is everyone doing? Are they checking out the Web? Nope. They are e-mailing, aren't they? Why is e-mail so addictive? Here are my top reasons-

• E-mail is about information exchange- the essence of communication.
• It is NOT in real-time. [That explains why more people do not chat or IM.]
• You reply when you want to.

If e-mail is something people are really addicted to, you would think it would be the top way to communicate with consumers, right? Wrong! Why? People open e-mail from those they know and they dub everything else Spam. Sigh! What's a company to do?
