Course Requirements

Written Work

Students will do two types of writing assignments: responses and two short papers.

Responses are one-page (typed) essays you will write in response to specific questions on readings and/or films.  The idea is to process the readings, exercise critical thinking and develop perspectives in writing.  We are looking for your progress in advancing interesting, informed arguments, and your willingness to try out ideas and follow them through. Responses will be graded on a check-plus, check, check-minus system. We will not accept late responses; documented medical excuses are the only exception.  Failure to submit responses on time will result in a grade of zero for the assignment.

Two short papers (3 ½ - 4 ½ pages each).  You will write two short papers, each on assigned topics.  Each paper will be submitted in draft form, and then resubmitted following a process of conferring and rewriting.  Failure to submit a draft will bring a reduction of .5 in the paper grade, as will failure to show up for the conference; .5 will be deducted for each day a final draft is late, including weekends and holidays.

Tests

There will be a brief midterm during the course and a final exam at the end.

Regular Class Participation

The thoughtful participation of all is required.  This means listening well to classmates as well as contributing to class and group discussions; students should come to each class session prepared to discuss films and readings.
