McCreary model calculations


Grunter (linear continuous stratification, double sum over vertical and meridional modes)

Forcing is a steady zonal jet directed outward from the eastern boundary at 10°N. Jet parameters are: Half-sine in x (length 20° longitude, but only the western half is over the ocean); Gaussian in y (centered at 10°N, meridional scale 100km).
Model was run with 101 vertical, 501 meridional modes. This is way too many (see mode figures below).
Damping timescale was 100 years (except as noted below). Model crashes (all NaNs) for damping timescale shorter than about 50 years.
