Cell-free system for assembly of other viruses:

The Lingappa lab has also developed novel cell-free systems to study assembly of other viruses.  For example, we successfully developed a system for studying hepatitis C virus capsid formation (Klein et al., 2004; Klein et al., 2005). Our studies of HIV assembly in the last decade suggest that our underlying hypothesis, that cellular proteins play a critical role in nearly every step of virus assembly, could apply to many or all viruses.
