- July 27, 2017: Dr. Jeff Ban is part of the team (including New York City Department of Transportation, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and others) to win the 2017 Franz Edelman Finalist Award by INFORMS.
- June 13, 2017: A paper jointly written by the iUTS Lab and its collaborators from the Automotive Engineering Department of Tsinghua University, China (Mr. Biao Xu, Prof. Keqiang Li, Mr. Yougang Bian, and Prof. Jianqiang Wang) recently received the Best Paper Award (2nd Prize) from the IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium 2017. The paper titled V2I Based Cooperation between Traffic Signal and Approaching Automated Vehicles, aims to develop cooperative methods between traffic signal control systems and automated vehicles to reduce urban traffic congestion and fuel consumption. The paper is one of the two papers selected from over 300 papers submitted to the Symposium. The lead author, Mr. Biao Xu, is currently a Ph.D. student of Tsinghua University (under the supervision of Prof. Keqiang Li), who was a visiting student to the iUTS Lab from November 2016 to May 2017. He conducted an important part of the research during his visit at UW.
- August 15, 2016: Dr. Jeff Ban and his iUTS lab joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle.
- May 5th, 2014: Dr. Jeff Ban received the 2014 RPI School of Engineering Research Excellence Awards (for Junior Faculty).
- January 15, 2013: Dr. Jeff Ban received the New Faculty Award by the Council of Transportation Research Centers (CUTC) and the American Road and Transportation Builders’ Association (ARTBA) to recognize his “outstanding teaching and research contributions to the transportation field."
- March 15, 2011: Dr. Jeff Ban received the NSF CAREER Award CMMI-1055555 on CAREER: Using Mobile Sensors for Traffic Knowledge Extraction and Dynamic Network Management. This project will take a systematic view on relatively high penetration mobile sensor data, and develop foundations that can best use such data for traffic knowledge learning and dynamic network management. Educational and outreach activities will also be conducted, based on the research, to teach undergraduate and graduate students and to disseminate research results to practitioners, and to outreach to minority universities, academia, government agencies, and the industry. - October 10, 2010: We are recruiting highly motivated graduate students working in the areas of modeling mobile sensors as traffic probes,transportation network modeling and related applications (such as congestion pricing), large-scale traffic simulation, and ITS in general. Students with strong backgrounds in traffic engineering, mathematics or operations research, statistics, and optimal control are encouraged to apply. - September 01, 2010: We received another NSF grant EFRI-1024647 BECS Collaborative Research: Modeling the Dynamics of Traffic User Equilibria Using Differential Variational Inequalities. The project is to investigate, by collaborating with Dr. Jong-Shi Pang at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Dr. Henry Liu at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, the use of differential variational inequaltity (DVI) to model and compute the solutions of dynamic user equilibria (DUE).
- September 01, 2010: We received the NSF grant CMMI-1031452 Collaborative Research: Mobile Sensors as Traffic Probes - Addressing Transportation Modeling and Privacy Protection in an Integrated Framework. The project is to investigate, by collaborating with Marco Gruteser at the Rutgers University, how to develop privacy protection techniques to collect and process mobile traffic sensors and how to use privacy-preserving mobile sensor data to estimate real time performance measures of signalized intersections (such as delay, queue length, and emissions).
