If you want to find collocations (other words that are commonly used with specific words) for the vocabulary words you have chosen, visit one or more of these Web sites. The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary Online will give you a definition, other forms, and common words used with vocabulary words. The British National Corpus has a "sampler" that you can use to find collocations. The sampler is free. The Collins Corpus Concordance Sampler is another tool to find collocations. It's also free. The UW Libraries Reference Tools Dictionary Page has a variety of dictionaries that you can use. Some of them can be accessed from home, and some can't. The Oxford English Dictionary is the most complete dictionary of the English language. Its purpose is to trace usage as it changes over time. If you want to build your vocabulary and practice your spelling at the same time, visit the National Spelling Bee website. |
