Textbook & Materials:
  • Grammar Dimensions 2 and the Grammar & Writing 3 Course Pack (available at the University Bookstore in Textbooks, English 99 section)
  • an English-English dictionary, like the Cambridge, Longman or Oxford dictionaries
  • a 3-ring notebook and standard-sized lined looseleaf paper (8 1/2" x 11", 3 holes), available at the University Bookstore
  • small sheets of lined paper (9.5" x 6.5" or 8.5" x 5.5") with a ring to hold them together
  • a large green examination book for a writing journal


Objectives:
In this two-hour course, you learn a range of grammatical structures that will be applied to writing paragraphs using various rhetorical styles. The emphasis is on fully explaining personal opinions, reasons, and examples.

Grading:

In order to pass this course, you must receive an average score of at least 70% on your midterms and final exams (the final exam counts as 2 exams) AND an average score of at least 70% on your out of class writing assignments. After you pass the course, your final grade will be calculated using a 4.0 scale as follows.

  • Homework 20%
  • Writing Journals 10%
  • Participation* 20%
  • Multiple Draft Writing 25%
  • Midterm & Final Exam 25%


*Participation means asking questions as soon as you have them, volunteering answers, actively taking part in discussions with your classmates, and listening politely when others are speaking.

Midterm Exam: Week 5 (check the course calendar for the exact date)

Final Exam: 10 March
