Textbook & Materials:

Open Forum 3 by Duncan & Parker, available in the University Bookstore in the textbook section in the English 99 section
√ an English-English dictionary, like the Longman or Oxford dictionaries
√ standard-sized lined loose-leaf paper (8 1/2" x 11", 3 holes), available at the University Bookstore


Objectives:
By the end of the quarter, you will have several opportunities to
  • demonstrate your ability to understand a variety of types of listening, including conversations, interviews, and media presentations;
  • demonstrate your ability to orally evaluate spoken input; and
  • make presentations, individually and in a group

Grading:

In order to pass this course, you must receive an average score of at least 70% on your midterm and final projects. The final project is double-weighted. After you pass the course, your final grade will be calculated using a 4.0 scale as follows.

  • Listening & Speaking Graded Assignments = 50%
  • Participation* and Attendance = 30%
  • Homework = 20%

*Participation means asking questions as soon as you have them, volunteering answers, actively taking part in discussions with your classmates, and listening politely when others are speaking.
