Unanswered questions and Future directions:

The Lingappa lab is now focused on identifying other components of ABCE1-containing intermediates in primate cells expressing HIV, and understanding how these host proteins function during HIV capsid assembly. Many questions about the HIV capsid assembly pathway remain to be answered. Some of these are discussed on the Current Research Questions page, and include:

1. Which cellular factors are important in the HIV assembly pathway, and what are their mechanisms of action?

2. How does HIV-1 Gag target to membranes during assembly?

3. How does the assembling virus selectively package the HIV genome?
