Actor James Doohan Dies After a Battle with Alzheimer's Disease

July 20, 2005 Actor James Doohan, who played Scotty in the original Star Trek television series and movies, died at the age of 85 on July 20, 2005. Doohan had been fighting Alzheimer's disease and contracted pneumonia. In addition to suffering from memory loss, confusion and changes in mood, people with Alzheimer's disease may lose their ability to move around and eat. Movement problems may lead to bed sores. Problems swallowing food may lead to pneumonia if food is inhaled. In fact, pneumonia is a frequent cause of death to people with Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Doohan will be missed by his family, friends and many fans. |
