Course Requirements

Course Materials:
There are two required texts which can be obtained at the University Bookstore:

Northwest Environment Watch. 2004. Cascadia Scorecard: Seven key trends shaping the northwest. NEW, Seattle.

Wackernagel, M. and W. Rees. 1996. Our Ecological Footprint: Reducing Human Impact on Earth. New Society Publishers, Gabriola, Canada.

Other course readings are available through direct links on this course website.

Initial Assignment:
Due the first day of class, Monday March 27.
Read the required 2004 Cascadia Scorecard, compiled by Northwest Environment Watch. Come to class ready to discuss two things:
  • How do the measures in the scorecard relate to what you understand sustainability to be?
  • Since the Cascadia environment includes both aquatic and agricultural ecosystems, and since the Scorecard does not evaluate either of these systems, how would you go about applying the Scorecard type of analysis to these important parts of our regional environment?
Course Projects, Reports and Field Trips:
By week 4 of the class (18 and 20 April), students will form into interdisciplinary groups of three (roughly: natural scientist, social scientist, policy analyst). Each group will develop a term project involving some aspect of sustainable natural resource science and policy. Oral presentations will be made the final two class sessions (24, 31 May) and written reports will be due the last day of class (31 May).

There will be two weekend course field trips. At weekend 4 (22 April) there will be a farm field trip and at weekend 6 (6 May) there will be a fishery field trip.

Other than that, it's all reading and talking. For daily assignments, see the Course Schedule page.
