Assignment for Monday, April 17: Forming Groups and Formulating Projects

Since the main task for today is to come up with projects in which many of you will be working with environmental organizations, we thought we'd start by reading Richard White's classic "Are You an Environmentalist, or Do You Work for a Living?," from William Cronon's Uncommon Ground, just to keep you from getting too idealistic.

Other than that, we want everyone to come to class with some ideas on the types of group projects you want to do. We will first have a brief presentation by Rachel Vaughn from the Carlson Center, who is contacting some local organizations that may be interested in hosting one or more research groups from our class to do short-term projects on or in conjunction with their organizations. The options she presents will be just that, however; you may also choose your own projects, and we will spend the day in an exercise that will not only match people with possible topics, but match people with possible partners.

After the groups are tentatively formed, we will want to schedule appointments to meet with each group separately for a half-hour conference to discuss the particulars of your project and how you should get started on it.
