Skipping a quarter:
Student must fill out an on-leave form. Otherwise, they get dropped from
the program and have to re-apply. You do NOT have to fill out an on-leave
form if you do not take summer courses.
Transferring credits from another institution:
In taking extension classes, grad students have to sign up for Graduate
non-matriculated, NOT non-matriculated. GNM-- this is status they attain
by applying to COE (this is before they take GRE’s and are admitted
to a program).
The Grad School will count up to 6 credits from another recognized accredited
institution. The only restriction they have is that courses cannot be
correspondence (see “transfer credit” section of the following
website: http://www.grad.washington.edu/stsv/mastersinfo.htm
). So Distance Learning courses will count. They should be graduate-level
and credit bearing courses.
Up to 12 Graduate Non-matriculated credits may be transferred into a M.Ed.
program at the adviser's discretion. If the credits are from another university,
up to 6 may count toward this 12. In short, a total of 12 graduate credits
may be transferred whether it is 12 UW GNM credits or 6 UW GNM combined
with 6 from another university. Bothell and Tacoma are counted as UW credits.
These must be graduate credits. Post-baccalaureate is not the same as
grad credit.
Make-up of master’s committee:
According to Grad School Policy, Memo 13 (http://www.grad.washington.edu/Acad/gsmemos/gsmemo13.htm),
half of the committee must be grad faculty and the chair has to be one.
Since the College requires only two signatures on the master’s warrant,
the chair of the reading committee must be graduate faculty. The second
reader does not have to be one.
Getting entry codes:
For education courses, you call the appropriate area secretary. Keep this
list for your future reference. If it's an EDPSY course, call 543-1139
If it's an EDC&I course, call 543-6636. If it's an EDLPS course, call
543-1836. If it's an EDSPE course, call 543-1827
Documentation of master’s – when does it appear on transcript
If you get more questions about it, just tell them that their degree is
posted 3-4 weeks after the last day of the quarter. If they need something
sooner, they can go through the Office of the Registrar – Graduation
and Academic Records office in Schmitz. Their number is (206) 543-1803
and they are in 264 Schmitz hall.
Miscellany for Masters:
• Everyone but TEP students have to take the GRE.
• Thesis credits are EDUC 700.
• The project credits are EDC&I 600.
• Masters student can mark on their apps if they want to start in
the summer or in the fall. They can change this option once.
• If you are only GNM you get no break from the state on tuition,
you pay by the credit for all credits. If you are in a program, after
7 credits, its all free.
• I can reschedule masters exams myself without permission. I just
need to reserve a room and a proctor and tell student services.
• Grad school deadline for Winter admission is Nov. 1.
Common Questions about PhD.
Transfer credits? PhD
student cannot transfer any credits.
Changing committee members: Grad school leaves this up
to Graduate Program Coordinator. Changes made on downloadable form (different
for EDD and PhD). Form will tell you whose signature is necessary.
Who is needed at exams—Chair, GSR, at least another
member who is member of grad faculty.
Person required for each cognate and specialization outside the college.
Currently you cannot have 2 cognates in same area. You can have specialization
in science ed and cog in C&I somewhere.
If you have a second person outside the college, you add another person
within the college too. Can be a free-floater.
To have a cognate in research methods, you have to go beyond 3 courses
in Research section. That is 3 beyond 525 and 526. Must also go to a research
methods person for this.
When can you switch cognates? If proposal is filed, then
they have to reconstitute committee. Up to proposal time, supervisory
committee form still needs to be re-done.
