IslandWood Connection

The College of Education is fortunate to have a collaboration with IslandWood, one of our region’s newest and one of the nation’s most dynamic educational facilities. IslandWood offers programs for children, graduate students, teachers, families, and adults. Participants in these programs are immersed in the spectacular beauty of their 255-acre natural habitat while participating in programs led by expert scientists, artists, and educators. IslandWood’s primary focus is discovery-based learning and outdoor field experiences for children that appeal to different learning styles and interests. Their programs integrate scientific inquiry, technology, and the arts, helping both children and adults develop a deeper understanding of the relationships between biological and cultural diversity.

Each year, IslandWood enrolls a number of graduate students who take courses there and work with the hundreds of elementary age students who come to learn more about the environment and their role in environmental stewardship. At the end of the year-long program, these graduate students earn a certificate, and they also have the option of continuing on in their studies at the University of Washington in Seattle for either a masters degree in Science Education or a masters degree in Teaching and Curriculum. Many of their credits taken at IslandWood count towards this degree.
