The main goal of the course is to provide a broad overview of major classes of organic reactions, including pericyclic reactions, addition reactions, reactions of carbonyl compounds, and reactions of common reactive intermediates (cations, anions, radicals, and carbenes). The emphasis is on the reaction mechanisms and applications in synthesis. Certain topics in physical organic chemistry particularly helpful in studying reaction mechanisms, such as kinetics, kinetic isotope effects, and LFERs, are also covered.
Second course for students planning to take three quarters of organic chemistry. The course covers physical properties and transformations of several classes of organic molecules, including aromatic and carbonyl compounds.
