Computer Science / Data Science Contests for High School Students

In 2013-2014, I helped to design and organize the Paul Allen Computing Challenge in collaboration with the Puget Sound Computer Science Teacher's Association (PSCSTA).

The contest was titled "Data Science to the Rescue!" Students were tasked with analyzing a real data set of social media posts shared during a disaster event. We connected groups that passed a first round qualifier with a UW student-mentor, who helped them define their own research questions and execute a research study. Students presented research posters at the Living Computer Museum on June 7, 2014. Seventeen teams (~40 students) competed.
