STAT/BIOSTAT 550: ONLINE
Statistical Genetics I; Discrete Mendelian traits

Instructor: Elizabeth Thompson
Spring Quarter, 2010

Here is the course announcement.
Here is a draft schedule

The draft schedule is usually the first place I update and check links.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT ANY NON-WORKING LINKS THAT YOU BELIEVE SHOULD BE WORKING.

Course information

Grading:

Course will be graded 30% homework, 30% computing labs, 10% for participation in email discussions of homeworks/labs, and 30% final project (about which more later).
There is no final exam, apart from the project.
I will drop your lowest-scoring homework in computing your overall homework score. (But all 5 labs count, except maybe the graphics lab, depending on how that works long-distance.)
Feel free to email me questions about course, lab, or homework material.

Book information

The useful books arel listed in the course announcement.

My book might be most useful (except the relevant bits are mostly in the audio power-point slides). Weir's book is useful. Ott's book will be very useful for those going further in this area, but less so for this first course. Lange's book is there mainly for interest: it has some very good bits.

Note I have copies of my book available, courtesy of the UW 2007 Statistical Genetics Summer Institute, at the original $30 price. If you want it, and cannot get it at reasonable price, contact me.

Email

is good, and can be used to submit homeworks etc. We will also have email discussions, but email is NOT an "instant-messaging" system.

Computing

HERE is a link to StatGen computing page. You will need your UWNet ID to access this page.

HERE is some information on how to get yourself set up for the computing for this class.

We will be using some of the software for Statistical Genetics installed on the Biostat linux cluster.
I have provide a list of full names and UWNet IDs to the Biostat systems administrator: he should be contacting you with password etc. information.

Some bits and pieces of possible computing help are given in the Course materials
