2. NEUROSCIENCE FOR KIDS "SITE OF THE MONTH"

The Neuroscience for Kids "Site of the Month" for May is "Neuron Archive" at:

https://www.cell.com/neuron/archive

This month's Site of the Month selection is a bit unusual because it is collection of issues from a scientific journal called "Neuron." The archives hold issues of the journal going all the way back to 1988. Although the science in "Neuron" is fascinating (you can read article summaries for free), the reason why I selected this site is because of the artwork on the cover of each journal issue.

When you arrive at the Neuron Archive web site, click on "Cover." This will bring you to a page with all of the journal cover art designs for 2021. If you click on one of the covers, you will be sent to a page where you can enlarge the artwork (click on the small magnifying glass in the lower right side of the picture) and read a description about the picture. You can quickly scroll to other covers by clicking on the arrows on the far right and left sides of the page.

The artists who created the covers certainly used their imagination to create art to represent a neuroscientist's work. This might be a fun project for you to try too. Find a research paper and then draw a picture that captures the meaning of the science.

3. SUMMER NEUROSCIENCE PROGRAMS

There may be time for middle and high school students to apply to a summer science (neuroscience) program. Some programs are online only and others are in-person; also some are very expensive so read the details of each program carefully.

4. NEUROSCIENCE ESSAY CONTEST

High school students can enter the International Neuroethics Society (INS) and the International Youth Neuroscience Association (IYNA) sponsored Neuroethics Essay Contest in 2021. Winners will receive a free 1-year INS student membership ($30 value) and a $250 prize. The deadline for entries is July 2, 2021. Contest rules are available at:

5. A FEW MINUTES WITH...

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a neuroscientist? If your answer is "yes," then spend "few minutes with" me by watching some brief interviews I've done with some neuroscientists. The interviews include people at different stages of their careers and focus on how each person got interested in neuroscience. Watch the interviews on the 2021 UW Brain Awareness Week page at:

7. THE TREASURE TROVE OF BRAIN TRIVIA

A. Earlier this year, United Kingdom retailer End partnered with Saucony to create a shoe called the Azura 2000. The running shoe is also named "The Brain" because it was inspired by that three pounds of tissue in your head and includes a pattern that looks like the surface of the brain.

C. All happening in the month of May: Better Hearing and Speech Month, Better Sleep Month, Healthy Vision Month, Huntington's Disease Awareness Month, Lyme Disease Awareness Month, Mental Health Month and National Stroke Awareness Month.

D. Bees and wasps can remember human faces. (Source: Avarguès-Weber, A. et al., [2018] Does holistic processing require a large brain? Insights From honeybees and wasps in fine visual recognition tasks, Front. Psychol. 9:1313. doi: 10.3389/fpsyg.2018.01313)
