Course Objectives:

The primary objectives of TCSS 558 is to communicate a variety of diverse techniques and concepts associated with constructing software that is distributed, reliable, efficient, and extensible. An array of topics and design tradeoffs will be covered which underlie modern Applied Distributed Computing. Topics include:

  • Programming multi-threaded server applications
  • Communication among objects on different computers (RPC, distributed objects)
  • Creating a server accessed by multiple clients
  • Distributed system architectures
  • Coordination algorithms
  • Consistency and replication
  • Introduction to Fault Tolerant Systems Implementation
  • Introduction to naming (locating and tailoring components)
