ASILI Lab

We conduct critical cross-domain research on emerging technology and their impact on policy, privacy, equity, access and justice. These involve emerging technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart cities, and internet of things; and social media discourse (from TikTok to Reddit).

Recruitment

If you are a current UW PhD student interested in collaborating with the lab, simply email me and discuss your interests and alignment.

PhD Applicants: I recruit through the iSchool program. Applications open in September (see if my name is on the list of iSchool Faculty looking to recruit for the coming year). Strong candidates would have some overlap with my expertise, and have research interest in some intersections between HCI, privacy/cybersecurity and indigenous knowledge. Candidates should also either possess some technical skills (that involves programming software) or analytical/qualitative research (with examples of your writing).

  • I do review each application that has stated preference with working with me. However, you can email me with a brief about your research interests and how our interests align, your CV, and any details about your previous research/writing. I do not need to see your transcripts.
  • You can attend the student-led PhD information session (held in late October) to ask questions and gain additional insights about the program.

Masters Students: I typically have capacity to advise 1-2 Masters students each year. If you are interested in working with me, send me an email with a brief about your research interest, your background, how our research interests align, and a copy of your CV.

Undergraduate Students: I am always looking to work with undergraduate students. If you have taken a class with me before, or you are an advanced undergraduate student: I can advise an Independent Study credit (typically you have the option to support active research in the lab, pick a tangent, or advance your own research agenda); I can also support a Capstone project which typically align with existing research project in the lab. There are also opportunities for funded Summer Internships that you can apply to work with me through CRA Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU), or DUB REU
