SCHOLARSHIPS
AND FINANCIAL AID:
•
Program-specific scholarships: Efforts
will be made, depending on the final program budget, to offer fellowships
of up to $500, based upon merit.
•
Other scholarships: For
additional information regarding scholarships, including the quarterly
IPE scholarship, students should reference http://ipe.washington.edu/domestic/financialaid.html.
•
Non-UW students are eligible for the program-specific
scholarships; they should inquire with their home institutions about
other scholarship for which they may also be eligible.
•
Financial
Aid:
Most forms of financial aid can be utilized during participation in
this program. UW participants who are on financial aid should contact
the UW Financial Aid Office to verify that their awards will apply.
Students interested in applying for increased financial aid during
their quarter of study abroad should obtain a revision request from
the Financial Aid office, and a budget of student expenses from the
IPE office, and submit both to the Financial Aid office in Schmitz
Hall. Non-UW students should check with the financial
aid office at their home institutions to find out more about financial
aid applicability.
ADDITIONAL EXPENSES, NOT COVERED BY THE PROGRAM FEES:
• Round-trip flight to Beijing: Typically around
$1,600 from the U.S. (flights this year are expensive due to the proximity
to the Beijing Olympic Games, which start on August 8).
• Food: Dorm meals are available at $1.35 per
meal; students eating in restaurants outside campus should calculate
a minimum of $5 per day.
• Insurance: Students participating in this
program should maintain major medical insurance coverage that covers
them internationally. More information about insurance can be found
at http://ipe.washington.edu/domestic/insurance.html.
Students currently enrolled at the UW
- Must submit forms
to concurrently enroll in the UW during summer quarter 2006.
- In addition, UW students will be required to attend the FIUTS/IPE
Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation prior to departure in May 2006.
Students currently not enrolled at the UW
- Non-UW students are encouraged to apply and will be given equal
opportunity in the application process. We will do everything in our
ability to ensure successful transfer of credits to other universities.
- Non–UW students should submit the Non-Matriculated Application
for Non-UW Students (available at http://ipe.washington.edu)
to IPE upon acceptance to the program. They will then be given a UW
Student Number, a UW Net ID, and access to the MyUW personal page,
UW email, etc. The fee for this ("non-matriculated student fee")
is $200 and will be assessed to students’ new UW accounts upon
receipt of the form.
- Like all other students, non-UW students must also
submit forms to concurrently
enroll in the UW during summer quarter 2006.
CALCULATING
YOUR EXPENSES FOR THE SUMMER
The following figures, in U.S. dollars, represent all costs that a
student may legitimately incur while participating in the program.
The figures are intended to help students apply for loans and for
international studies advisors to estimate need for financial aid.
As the explanations for each item show, in many cases actual expenses
may be significantly lower.
1. Tuition, program fees, room, and local transportation:
$3,200
2. Application fee: NONE
3. Registration fee: $200 for UW students / $400 for non-UW students
4. Textbooks: $25 (most In readings will be made available for download
through the UW library electronic reserve system). However, a list
of recommended readings will be issued. The total of cost of the recommended
readings may amount to $150.
5. Meals: $250 (students using the BFA meal card are likely to pay
no more than $100)
6. Airfare: consult a travel agency in your area. Ticket prices may
vary widely based on the proximity to the Olympic Games.
7. Health insurance: typically $30-50
8. Travel clinic (consultation and immunizations): up to $100 (depending
on student's previous immunizations)
8. Visa to the People's Republic of China: around $70 (depending on
nationality). Students living far from a PRC consulate may need the
assistance of a private visa service, which typically charges $45
for handling fees.
9. Travel inside China: $30.
10. Personal expenses: $20 (laundry detergent, sanitary needs, and
the like). Students are strongly advised to bring at least an additional
$100 and a credit card for cases of emergency, such as change of flight
date)
The fine print:
Program fees are paid in dollars; most program expenses are
paid in the Chinese currency, RMB. Although we try to plan for currency
fluctuations, the program reserves the right to modify the program
fee based upon dollar devaluation or severe inflation. If such a change
occurs, students will be notified of the increase and an adjustment
will be made to the final program payment.
