Assignments 1 & 2, due 9/29 and 10/1

ASSIGNMENT 1, Due Monday, September 29

I  BY SUNDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 28:   E-mail me  a brief mathematical autobiography. It needn't be particularly thorough or detailed—what I would like to know is roughly your current level and roughly your current feelings about mathematics and, insofar as you can trace them, how you arrived at those feelings. Spend a little time reflecting before you start writing – it can be interesting to delve in the area.

Put on the subject line: "170 math autobio for [your name]", and send it to warfield@math.washington.edu, with a cc. to maduarte@u.washington.edu

II  For MONDAY, SEPTEMBER   29:  Buy the textbook. Read both the Message to Prospective and Practicing Teachers on pages vii – xi, and the introduction and first section of Chapter 1 (pp 1 – top of 5). On Monday you will be in a group, and you and your groupmates will be discussing some parts of the two Discussion sections on pp. 4 and 5. Think about how you might answer them.

ASSIGNMENT 2, Due Wednesday, October 1

Read §1.2

Do Learning Exercises 1 - 9

Turn in #3, 5, and 8

NOTE: All the problems you are not turning in have answers in the back of the book. This is a very good way of checking yourself, but presents a serious danger of messing up your learning if you look at it too soon. Avoid temptation! Be wary!!

This one you will not be turning in, but we will be discussing it in some depth on Wednesday before I hand out the Problem Potpourri. Finish the worksheet we were working on in class today, focusing hard on what you are doing and why you are doing it. The worksheet is attached at the left for those of you who missed class.
