Seminar in Development & Socialization: Motivation in Context

Course description

This is an advanced seminar on the role of context in motivation to learn. After decades of studying the individual, or the effects of different contexts on individuals, motivation theorists have been moving toward a situated view of motivation. We will examine their thinking and the research evidence to date. Most current work is in the traditions of sociocultural theory or sociocognitive theory, but we will take a look at other views as well, including discourse theory and identity development.

This seminar is for those who have a background in either some version of learning in social contexts or motivation, or both! I hope to bring together students from Cognitive Studies in Education (CSE), Human Development & Cognition (HDC), and other areas of the College, share our expertise, and ultimately push the field.

Grading policy

Course is CR/NC. Each student will contract individually with me for a project and written product that fits his or her current research needs.
