For the first week, unlike any of the other weeks, you don't have assigned readings, but you still have assignments. Learn your way around the space of China by looking at Some maps of China. As you do so, and in preparation for the January 27 Time and Space Quiz, educate yourself on the following questions:
  • What are the most populous and productive regions of China?
  • Where do the Han people live?
  • What are the major river basins of the Han areas of China?
  • What are the major agricultural regimes of the different regions?
  • What are China's most important industrial cities?
  • What and where are China's provinces?
With regard to the last question, you might want to practice filling in a blank map or practicing the provinces with an online quiz.

To review the introductory lecture on geography, you can look at the slides.

Now learn the time part. Take a look at The modern China timeline and learn as much as you can. At least be able to identify the major historical periods, the times of transition from one to another, and the major events listed under each:

Finally, an assignment to do on your own. Be able to identify the following people:

  • Hong Xiuquan
  • Zeng Guofan
  • The Empress Dowager Cixi
  • Sun Zhongshan or Sun Yat-sen
  • Jiang Jieshi, Chiang Chung-cheng, or Chiang Kai-shek
  • Mao Zedong
  • Zhou Enlai
  • Richard M. Nixon
  • Deng Xiaoping
  • Jiang Zemin
  • Hu Jintao
  • Wen Jiabao
  • Xi Jinping
  • Li Keqiang
  • Liu Xiaobo
  • Tenzin Gyatso
  • Ai Weiwei
I bet you can do the whole thing on Google.
This should give you enough to do for the week without any reading assignments.
