X.           Sustainability in Teaching and the Higher Education Mission

Bounce me down to the bibliography citations

What’s Here

This bibliography is concerned with disturbing environmental and social trends, along with the potential to make things better and the risks if we don’t.  One obvious method for making a better future is education. This section shares links to articles focused on what can, should, or shouldn’t characterize an education centered on sustainability, along with articles on the how and why of infusing the principles of sustainability across a curriculum or institution.

As our sustainability challenges get more dire and urgent, higher education has a moral responsibility to walk the talk of sustainability, alert students to this challenge, develop a more inclusive, problem-posing, and transformative suite of pedagogies, and prepare students to both tackle the challenges and thrive in a destabilized world.1, 2, 3  After all, the architects of the mess we are in, and the next generation of leaders who are programmed to perpetuate the economic and political systems that have failed us, are almost entirely recipients of a higher education degree.4  Interventions in the dominant models of higher education are clearly warranted.

There is an enormous literature that could be relevant to a section titled Sustainability in Teaching and the Higher Education Mission.  What follows below is but a small subset that I have read and found compelling.

This section is divided into five subsections.  Subsection A citations focus on publications making the case that since higher education institutions play a critical role in fostering or hindering a more sustainable civilization they have a responsibility to incorporate sustainability principles in their missions, educational offerings, and institutional operations. You can access an abbreviated timeline of calls for higher education to take the lead in fostering sustainability here. Subsection B citations focus on articles and survey reports that indicate the increasing desire by the world’s youth to have higher education explicitly grapple with climate change and other environmental threats via curriculum, community partnerships, and how they operate. Subsection C citations focus on articles regarding just what should constitute a sustainability education, including pedagogical considerations, learning objectives, curricular design, and controversies over the key themes and purpose of a sustainability-oriented education.  Subsection D citations focus on ways that institutions of higher education can better walk the talk of sustainability in their operations. Subsection E contains links to web sites offering sustainability-oriented teaching modules, activities, and other resources.

Before wading into the articles of this section, it is useful to have a grounding in the principles and controversies of sustainability.  You can find those articles in section IX.  Note that there is no one agreed upon way to design an education revolving around sustainability principles, challenges, practices, and proposals.  Several of the articles below dig into the controversies among the sustainability education community.5, 6, 7  It is best to think carefully on these controversies and the choices they interrogate when designing a course or a curriculum.  Section XI contains links to what I am calling Sustainability Manifestos.  These are proposals that students should be critiquing after they have acquired a decent understanding of the principles, challenges, and controversies of sustainability.
