AH290. Introduction to the History of Architecture (5 credits)

A general introduction to the history of buildings and cities, from prehistoric times to the present, and across a broad range of cultural contexts. Prerequisites: none.

 

Arch/AH488. American Architecture (3 credits)

American architecture from indigenous native American traditions to the present. Prerequisites: some background in architectural history.

 

Arch/AH490. Nineteenth Century Architecture. (3 credits)

From late eighteenth-century French rationalists, Neoclassicists, to fin-de-siecle Vienna and Paris. Includes theorists such as Ruskin, Viollet-le-Duc, and Semper; major movements, such as the Arts & Crafts, and the French Ecole des Beaux-Arts method of design. Prerequisites: some background in architectural history.

 

Arch/AH491. Twentieth Century Architecture. (3 credits)

Architecture in the twentieth century, mainly in Europe and the United States. Traces roots of Modernism in Europe in the 1920s, its demise in the 1960s, and recent trends such as Post-Modernism and Deconstruction. Prerequisites: some background in architectural history.

 

Arch/AH493. Architecture Since 1943 (3 credits)

Theories and forms in architecture from the end of World War II to the present. Includes new wave Japanese architects, recent Native American developments, and non-Western as well as Western trends. Prerequisites: some background in architectural history.

 

Arch/AH591. Seminar in Twentieth Century Architecture (3-5 credits)

Specific topic varies. Prerequisites: graduate standing with background in art history, architecture, architectural history or theory, or permission of instructor.
