Physics 116A, Winter 2007
Oscillations, Waves and Modern Physics Exams and Tests
The first exam is this coming Friday, January 19, during regular class time. The exam will test material covered in the first two Tycho homework assignments, the extra problems from the end of Chapters 13 and 14 for which solutions have been posted, the material covered in lectures from Chapters 13 and 14 of the text, except for the BEATS section of Ch. 14 (Section 14-9) and the Interferece subsection within Ch. 14, section 7 (even if done in class tomorrow, Thursday). 1/24/07. The solution to Exam 1 can be accessed through the link at left. For this test (or any of the future tests) you are allowed one page of your own notes, both sides if you wish. You shoulod bring to the test: a standard SCAN bubble sheet to answer the multiple choice questions (if you forget, the h-bar coffee shop in the physics building sells them), a pencil, and a calculator. NO CELL PHONE, MUSIC GADGETS, COMPUTERS, etc. Please seat leaving one seat between you and the next person. There is plenty of room in the class for everyone to be spread out. Do it without me having to ask you to move. I have posted a "sample test" from 13 years ago. The text was different, emphasized other things, especially oscillations in electrical systems. The first three pages are sample tests blank, the last two pages are the solutions to the sample tests. I may add a little bit more to this page after Thursday's lecture. 2/4/07. The SECOND EXAM is this coming Thursday, February 8. It will cover the topics from Interference and Beats on Chapter 14, all of Chapter 25, 26 and the first topic on camera and the eye on Chapter 27 (essentially the Tycho homeworks 3, 4, and 5, and the Problems from Walker that have been posted). A few pages of old tests from 1993-94 are posted. The link is on the margin, Sample Test 2. I will look for some problem on beats or interference, if they exist... Please note that some of the problems posted are blank and some have the solution on it. I don't seem to have blanks of some of the problems. The solution to the first page will be written today and posted tomorrow. Remember, text was different so there may be a question or two which are not in what we are doing now. 2/27/06. The "next test" is this Thursday, 3/1/07. Some sample problems have been posted, go to Sample Test 3 on the margin. This test will cover Optical Instruments, Chapter 27 of Walker's bood, Interference, Diffraction, thin films interference, diffraction gratings, diffraction from crystals, Chapter 28, and black body radiation, the photoelectric effect, momentum and energy of photons, the de Broglie's assumption that all particles have a wave character given by p = h/lambda, like for photons, more on crystal diffraction (like Tycho problem), and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, This is the material in the Tycho homeworks 6, 7 and 8, and the supplementary problems from Walker's book that are posted. The test will be like the previous tests, about 10 multiple choice questions and two problems that we will hand grade. The cover page of the test will have relevant information/equations, including a table of masses and conversion of units. A solution to Sample Test 3 will be posted late Wednesday (kind of out of time myself!) 3/14/07. The final exam is tomorrow, Thursday, March 15, at 8:30 am in the usual room (PAA 102). Please bring a standard scan sheet. check on marging for details. A solution to the sample final can be reached via the Solutions link. O.V. 3/16/07. I have posted here a blank copy of the final exam you took yesterday, and the solution to this exam is posted in solutions. The maximum possible total of points was 150, which correspond to 30 right answers. The top score was 125 points (25 right) and the average was 80 points (16 right) with a Standard Deviation of +/- 20 points. The graph posted on Tycho is in percentages, where 150 points is 100%. The exam is not top heavy, like some of you have asked via e-mail. Only one person got 125 points, a few more got 120, and so on. I have not made the grades yet for the whole course. This takes a little bit of time, sorting through the exams, dropping the low score, getting the Tycho points, and the bonus clicker points. Hopefully grades will be up by tomorrow (Saturday). You can check this web site for "grades", but they will be uploaded on Tycho when done. |
