Visual Illusions:

Some visual illusions reflect the functioning of our sensory systems (that is, our photoreceptors in the retina, or other neurons in the retina or lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus. Consider illusions 1 and 2 below:

Visual Illusion 1: Spinning Spiral

Fixate at the center of the rotating spiral for 1 minute, then immediately look at another object in the room. Is the world expanding? Apparently, our sense of "reality" is greatly affected by the functioning of our sensory systems!

Visual Illusion 2: Lightness illusions

These lightness illusions occur due to quirky properties of the early stages in visual processing.

Other visual illusions have more to do with our perceptual systems, in particular how our past experiences bias how we intepret the sensory information. These effects of prior experience on our perceptions can be absolutely profound. For example, consider illusions 3 and 4 below:

Visual Illusion 3: Color Illusions

Visual Illusions 4:  Depth perception illusions

Check out the "mask illusion" here!

Visual Illusion 5: Size/distance

Visual Illusion 6: Shape constancy
