Homework Assignment
3: Peer Critique Practice
During
class on Monday, January 10, we will discuss guidelines for effective cinema
studies writing. I will compile the class's comments into a peer
critique sheet that will be uploaded to the class Web page by 3:00 p.m.
To access the sheet, click
here.
In
class on Monday, I will also distribute a sample paper from one of my previous
film courses. Using the Web peer critique sheet as a guideline, write
comments on the essay. You should do the following in your comments:
-
Underline
the writer's main argument and restate it in your own words in the margins
of the paper. If you cannot identify a thesis or focusing question,
note this in the margins of the paper.
-
In the
margins of the paper, identify two to three places where the writer could
develop the argument. Pose questions that you think will help the
writer develop the argument or explain why the argument isn't convincing
to you.
-
Identify
at least one of the writer's strengths. In the margins of the paper,
explain why you think the author has done something effectively
At
the bottom of the page, write three suggestions the writer could use to
revise the essay, assuming that the essay is a first draft. Assuming
that the essay is a final draft, note the grade you would give the paper
and be prepared explain why you would assign this grade.
Remember
to write your name on the commented essay. Bring the marked essay
to class on Wednesday, January 12. |
