Winter
2015
As
an initial exercise, I’d like you to find answers to these questions without using any reference sources. No books, no indexes, no libraries or
librarians, no Web sites. Be
creative. There’s no right or wrong to
your approach—I just want you to explore alternative ways of answering
these questions. Some of these are
“real”; others I made up. Enjoy.
We’ll
discuss your approaches in class. I
won’t grade these, but we will talk about what you tried and what worked (and
didn’t). Don’t spend too much time on
these either; if you find yourself working for more than 30 minutes on any
question, move on.
The
questions:
How many bricks are there in a ton of
bricks?
Where were the Winter Olympics held in
2014?
How many people attended events during
those games?
What was my mother’s name?
