Seattle's Central Waterfront

From a Native American Settlement to an industrial corridor followed by the surge of tourism, the Central Waterfront in Seattle is overlaid with layers of histories, meanings, and physical imprints of the city’s transformation. Currently, it is faced with another major physical transformation—the demolition/replacement of the damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct and repair of the aging sea wall. What will happen to people and environmental/social processes that currently inhabit the waterfront? What else do we know about the waterfront beyond the prevalent discourses of economic revitalization, environmental restoration, and preservation? What are the hidden cultural landscapes on Seattle’s beleaguered waterfront? How can design express and articulate the multiple landscapes on the Central Waterfront?
