Note: Corrections to Lecture 21. The rule for linear polyatomics is there are 3N-5 vibrations for a molecule with N atoms. For carbon dioxide N=3 so 3N-5=4. For non-linear molecules like water the rule is 3N-6. For water 3N-6=3. See lecture 21.
