Calculation of Hole Pressure for Newtonian Fluids

Stephanie Yuen

The purpose of this project was to solve the hole pressure problem for Newtonian fluids in two and three dimensions. The hole pressure problem arises when there is flow between two flat parallel plates with a slit in the bottom plate. Although past experiments were conducted, inconsistent results returned. However, with the use of COMSOL Multiphysics numerical values can be obtained for hole pressure problem. Figure 1 displays a solution for the two dimensional model and Figure 2 shows a solution for the three dimensional model. Both solutions were obtained by using the incompressible Navier-Stokes model and a Reynolds number of 1.
